Introducing the Greater Horn Horizon Forum (GHHF)

The GHHF is a forum of scholars from the eight IGAD countries and their diaspora. The Forum was launched in November 2007 as an independent research organization with the mission of conducting policy relevant research on the Greater Horn’s many pressing challenges. UNESCO played a critical role in establishing as well as in sustaining the Forum in its early years. The Forum is based in Djibouti, and it has received generous support from the Government of Djibouti, IGAD and several other organizations.

The mission of the Forum includes:

  • To serve as a catalyst for promoting peace, stability, socio-economic development, and regional integration of the Greater Horn by focusing on commonalities characterizing the region;
  • Inform policy and serve as bridge between grassroots, civil society organizations, and policymakers of the region;
  • To bring civil society to the effort of integrating the Greater Horn region; and
  • To provide training to various civil society groups in a variety of areas.

The Forum has 16 Executive Committee members, 2 from Each of the countries of the Greater Horn.  Kidane Mengisteab, Professor of African Studies and Political Science at the Pennsylvania State University is the current chair of the Executive Committee.
